What is a HEIC file?
A HEIC file is a photo saved in Apple's High Efficiency Image Container format — the default format iPhones and iPads have used since iOS 11 (released 2017). It stores the same visual quality as a JPG in roughly half the file size, by using HEVC (H.265) video compression techniques applied to still images.
Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Storage efficiency. A typical 12MP iPhone photo saved as HEIC takes up about half the space of the same photo saved as a JPG, with no visible difference in quality. Apple made HEIC the default in iOS 11 so users could fit roughly twice as many photos in the same amount of device storage or iCloud space.
Why won't some apps or websites open my HEIC photos?
HEIC adoption outside Apple's own ecosystem has been slow. Windows only added native HEIC preview support in relatively recent versions, and even then it requires an extra codec extension from the Microsoft Store on many systems. Many web forms, older editing software, and some Android apps still expect JPG or PNG and will reject or fail to display a HEIC file outright.
Is HEIC the same as HEIF?
Not exactly, but they're closely related. HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the general container specification, standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). HEIC specifically refers to a HEIF file that uses HEVC compression — which is what Apple's implementation uses. In everyday use, "HEIC" and "HEIF" are treated as interchangeable, and both file extensions (.heic and .heif) describe essentially the same kind of file.
When should I convert HEIC to JPG?
- You're sending photos to someone on Windows who can't open them.
- You're uploading to a website or form that only accepts JPG or PNG.
- You're importing photos into older editing software without HEIC support.
- You want maximum compatibility for long-term archiving, since JPG is universally supported.
When should I keep files as HEIC, or convert JPG to HEIC?
If storage space matters more than universal compatibility — for example, archiving a large photo library, or backing up to a cloud service with limited free space — converting to HEIC can meaningfully reduce file size without a visible quality tradeoff.
