Why HEIC files won't open everywhere

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones save photos in by default since iOS 11. It uses HEVC compression to store the same visual quality in roughly half the file size of a JPG. That's great for storage — but HEIC support outside Apple's ecosystem is inconsistent: many Windows programs, older Android apps, email clients, and web forms only accept JPG or PNG.

Converting to JPG trades a bit of file size for universal compatibility — every browser, editor, and platform built in the last two decades can open a JPG.
